Are you looking to store some of your personal items in storage? Abacus Self Storage is here to help with advice that will make your experience – from packing to picking up again – go smoothly!
First up is making sure you have the proper packing materials; it’s a pain to be missing something during the process. Once you anticipate a move or needing to use storage, start saving your newsprint, flyers, and differently-sized boxes from deliveries ahead of time. We also have supplies available for purchase to get you started or in case you run out. You’ll need sturdy corrugated boxes, crates, and containers; packing paper, newsprint, bubble wrap, and/or packing peanuts; sealing tape that doubles as label tape; markers and writing implements. If you’re storing furniture, using covers is wise to protect them in-transit. Moving blankets can also aid when transporting large items to prevent damage. Be sure to have your tools and assembly instructions handy and use clear baggies to keep and easily locate screws and other small items.
We have a variety of self storage units in many sizes to suit your needs. Our friendly staff are glad to help you figure out which size is best for the job. Our units are incredibly clean, climate-controlled, and secure. Some of our security features include:
· Monitored intrusion alarms
· Excellent lighting
· Major emphasis on pest control
· A fully-fenced property with an electronic security gate
· Personalized key code access to the property
· Video camera surveillance
· Frequent security checks by the Property Manager
· An emergency electrical back-up system in case of a power failure
You can contact us today if you’d like a tour of the facility and different units. We offer short- and long-term options to suit any situation.
With packing, it’s better to be safe than sorry: make sure to individually wrap all fragile or breakable items in paper or bubble wrap. If you have old towels, rags, or clothes, these make great, washable cushioning. Fill the box up with extra material to pad out remaining spaces after packing. It’s a good habit to keep the original packaging for electronics because they come with the perfect housing. Be sure to label the contents of every box, which room they’re from, whether the box contains fragile items, and which side is up. If you’re storing many possessions from multiple rooms, try to stick to placing items from the same room in each box, or at least from adjacent rooms. Our units are clean and dust-free, but you’ll want to completely seal boxes with tape to prevent the environment from entering during transit. As you’re packing a box, periodically check to see that you can lift it! Use space efficiently by putting heavy things in smaller boxes.
Once you’re setting up your local storage unit in Thornhill or North York, place heavy, non-fragile boxes on the bottom and lighter on top. Sometimes fragile items are heavy, like home décor, so save a special corner or row for these to sit without stacking anything on top of them. We prohibit storing perishable items and fuel, so be sure to empty items of fuel, food, or anything that is flammable or that can go to waste. Make a map of where you’ve placed items in your unit. If you anticipate requiring access to some items and not others, place the boxes you’ll need to access inside the unit last.
Now you’re all set to store safely! We’re always here to help with any questions and offer our expert advice.
