Whether you’re ready for them or not, the holidays are coming. All signs point to their imminent arrival, from the wreathes decorating your city’s lamp posts to the near ubiquity of Christmas carols following you wherever you go. Now that the countdown is on in earnest, the push to get everything done in time can leave many of us feeling tense. What’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year ends up being the most stressful, leaving you no time to enjoy the season for what it is.
Watch for the growin ‘staches, beards, goatees, soul patches, and peach fuzz around town this November, as the GTA embarks on the 13th annual Movember. The month-long event helps bring awareness to men’s health, particularly that of depression, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer — three illness that many men are too embarrassed to talk about. This modesty benefits no one, as roughly 10,000 men die of prostate cancer each year. Meanwhile, suicide is one of the leading causes of death in men under 50.
Ask the crew working at Abacus storage units in Richmond Hill, and they’ll tell you it feels like we celebrated Thanksgiving ages ago, but our neighbours to the south are just gearing up for the big feast. You may not be invited to their meals of deep fried turkey, mac and cheese, or pumpkin pie, but that doesn’t mean you’re totally excluded from the festivities. The American Thanksgiving weekend is book-ended by two of the biggest shopping days of the year: Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Though these events may be as American as Thanksgiving football, more Canadians are taking advantage of these deals each year.
There are plenty of things to be afraid of as we near the 31st. Your neighbour’s motion-sensor witch ornament that always manages to catch you off guard when you leave for work is one of them. Another is Netflix’s impressive list of horror films you can’t seem to resist watching late at night, despite the subsequent nightmares. And let’s not forget about the price of candy for the trick-or-treaters — a price you pay knowing it will be slashed in half come November 1.
Is there any better time to curl up with a good book than the fall? We don’t think so. As the weather turns crisp and biting, our warm and cozy homes are a refuge against the changing seasons. The world outside our windows lights up with the mosaic of changing leaves and sets a picturesque scene as we start the next chapter of our favourite book. Curled up with the latest paperback and a pumpkin spiced latte, we escape reality to travel to far-off lands, pull off daring capers, or be swept off our feet by romantic suitors.
As a rule, autumn starts with the Fall Equinox, or September 22, but for most us, it isn’t until Thanksgiving that the season really sinks in. By that time, we’re accustomed to the cooling temperatures, the falling leaves, and pumpkin spice as the default flavouring in most baked goods. But who’s complaining when that means we get to dollop some pumpkin-spiced whipped cream onto a slice of pumpkin pie? Not us!
The cicadas may still be singing their song during the hazy, lazy days of August, but the temperatures dip quickly during its nights. Labour Day is just around the corner, and with it the long weekend foretells the final days of the CNE. All signs suggest that summer is drawing to a close — which means your first day back on campus is nearing faster than you think!
Summer blockbusters like Wonder Woman and Spider-Man: Homecoming has us nostalgic for summers spent catching up on the latest comic book series. But for some, they never left this hobby behind in summers past. They carried on flicking through comics well into adulthood under the cover of night — but no longer! What once was considered guilty pleasure by most adults is now a mainstream hobby as comic books are making a huge comeback in popular culture.
