When Canadians run out of space, they’re turning to storage facilities like Abacus to house their belongings. Unfortunately, many of them don’t use their unit to its full potential, leading to a waste of effort, time, and money.
We have a simple solution to this problem. Compared to the latest RPGs and survival horror FPS like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Resident Evil: Biohazard, our preferences are what you would call old school. We here at Abacus suggest you channel your inner arcade player as you let Tetris inspire you to use every last possible square inch available.
Our Mini Self Storage Walkthrough
When you’re stumped playing Skyrim or The Last Guardian, you don’t hesitate to pull up game walkthroughs. (It’s okay, you’re secret is safe with us). So why wouldn’t you do the same with your storage unit? Luckily, we’ve amassed a few tips right here so you don’t have to go looking in the dark corners of the web for storage cheats.
Take advantage of any hollow objects: Vases, cupboards, and drawers aren’t just things to be stored, they’re storage spaces in and of themselves. Make sure you use all of the space they provide by filling these objects up.
Store items according to weight: Make sure the largest, heaviest items stay low to the ground in your unit. They provide a great foundation for other objects, so you can pile items safely on top of them.
Use shelves & other boards: If you’ve ever stacked enough cardboard boxes you’ll notice the bottom ones tend to collapse under their combined weight. Place a shelf or other sturdy board across the tops of these boxes to boost their structural integrity.
Invest in vacuum-sealing bags: These plastic bags were designed so soft items like clothing and blankets can save space. You can suck all of the unnecessary air out of these bags with just a vacuum or tire pump.
Stack when possible: A lot of furniture can rest against each other in ways to maximize space in your unit. If you have multiple tables, flip one upside and place on top of the surface of another. If you have multiples of the same chair, stack them.
Accessorize your unit: If you’re still having trouble finding space for all of your stuff, consider shelves and hooks to take advantage of the space near your ceiling.
Our Most Popular Units’ Specs
Of course, sometimes, the only way to solve your storage issues is by going up to the next size. Here we’ve created a inventory rundown of our most popular units.
4 x 5: As our smallest option, this space is roughly the same size as the average closet. It’s best used to store things like books, small electronics, and a few boxes. For this reason, it’s popular amongst students who leave the GTA during their summer holidays.
5 x 10: This next size isn’t the only option after our smallest unit, but it gives our customers a better understanding of what you can do with the space. Those extra feet bump up this unit to the same size as a walk-in closet, which means you can store a few pieces of furniture like small couches, tables, and a mattress here.
10 x 10: This is the standard size of storage units across the country and can be compared to a typical bedroom. If you’re particularly good at packing and utilizing all of the space available, you could fit the contents of a 1–2 bedroom apartment here. This unit is perfect for those in between leases when they’re moving from one condo downtown to a less expensive option in the GTA.
10 x 30: As our largest option, this unit is reserved for those who need a lot of space. It’s roughly the same size as an extended garage and can house the contents of a 4 bedroom house. This extremely large space is popular for those moving house.
It may not have a rating at MetaCritic, but we’re willing to bet our version of Tetris has the best graphics you’ll ever experience. Nothing beats real life! Take advantage of our cheat sheet and see if you can find a little more space in your mini storage unit.
